The Analysis of the Nature of Oil Pollution and Environmental Degradation in Nigeria

Abstract

Nigeria being one of the oil producing countries is faced with the issue of environmental and ecological degradation, while the communities groaning under the pains negative socio-economic, health and environmental damages. The paper will examine the nature of this oil pollution and environmental degradation in Nigeria how it can be minimized. The paper finds that the weak and corrupt Nigeria legal system have not be able to address the issue of oil pollution and assuaged the sufferings of the communities and damage cause to the environment. Also further finds that the environmental impact of this oil pollution has further degenerates to increase in poverty, crisis and unrest within oil producing environment. The paper recommends a reconsideration of Nigeria’s environmental laws to support environmental enforcement and the political will to guarantee that the ambitions goals of Nigeria’s environmental statutes in the areas of environmental restoration are generally realized.
